The meeting was called to order at 9:05 by Ev Batey who turned the floor over to Lupe Anguiano for introduction of our guest speaker - Don Lowe, Customer Engineer Manager for GTE Network Services.
Mr. Lowe gave a brief overview of the company profile, both regulated and de-regulated divisions. Please visit the GTE website for more info and job postings. As part of their progressive technical research, they have chosen Ventura County to be the West Coast pilot area for Video Services Distribution (the up and coming video conferencing - virtual classroom technology).     He then turned the subject to:
Topic 1:  Employment possibilities
  1.  Customer Engineer: When assigned to an account, you will be involved in all phases of project, including installation, configuration and on-going maintenance. New employees are initially teamed with senior engineers for 4-6 months in order to obtain a feel for the work environment - then you will be sent for official training. At this level, you are considered "hourly wage" employees and are represented by the union. The projected growth in this area for his division will be 25%-30% in the following year.

2.
Application Engineer: Post-sale division. Responsible for long-term problems or upgrading customers' site.

3. Pre-Sales Engineer: Ascertain customer requirements, design and implementation of commercial networks.
Topic 2:  Employment Application
The process to become an employee of GTE is comprised of three steps:
   * Resume - In order for you to be selected as a possible candidate for employment, your resume needs to be neat and specify the position for which you are applying. Use key words (obtained from job postings); mention all education with emphasis on any special training; also mention any special projects in which you have participated; and previous work history. Try to keep resume as short as possible, no more than two pages. Click here for sample job posting.
   * Testing - A 90 minute, multiple-choice test comprised of approximately one hundred technical questions. This tests your basic technical knowledge.
   * Structured Interview - A panel of managers will field situational questions which have no "right" or "wrong" answer. They are evaluating your response to determine problem solving skills as well as how you will interact with customer and peers. Be thoughtful and poised, don't fidget and don't take to-o-ooo long to respond.
Topic 3:  Internship Program
Mr. Lowe will be coordinating a flexible internship program through Prof. Lynch. Anyone interested should register with Prof. Lynch , and be sure to specify what hours/days you would be available.
